DART Debts – Which Would You Choose?

To repair a pothole costs an average of £67 in the UK:

The unrecoverable debts of £297 million, including interest that Luton Borough Council has allowed to happen building the DART, could have, for example, repaired 4.44m potholes.

Safer, smoother public highways for cyclists and motorists or a giant train set, that doesn’t benefit the residents of Luton?

Whilst it is difficult to pin down the costs of repairing a footpath in the UK, a study of Local Authorities on Mr Google, gives a figure of circa £500 per square metre to repair such a footpath.

The unrecoverable debts of £297 million that Luton Borough Council has allowed to happen building DART, could have repaired 600,000 square metres of the footpaths of Luton.

Safer, easier to walk footpaths in Luton, or again a giant train set?

Libraries, community centres, the list is long for projects that £297 million pound could have been used for, to enhance the lives of Luton’s residents.

However the residents of Luton never had the choice; Luton Borough Council decided DART was more important than the residents it is supposed to serve.

DART was built for £391 million including interest. The Luton Rising airport expansion plans have cost in excess of £78 million, including interest, and the expansion project has a price tag of circa £3 billion.

Luton Borough Council plan to add all these costs to the next operating concession contract in 2032. When that is not achieved, they will write off all these extra debts, and attempt to finance the project themselves.

Putting money into the upkeep of the town of Luton, or run up the debts and run down the town even further?
